How Not to Wear Too Many Hats

The average pastor of a smaller church (without a staff) can come to the point of burnout if he spends too much of his time doing what he is not called and gifted to do.  He must realize that he is neither gifted nor qualified—on purpose—to function in all of the callings of the fivefold ministry, even when it is obvious that all the callings are desperately needed.  I spent too many years wasting too much time trying to do things that I was not good at!  For example, I do not have the gifting of a prophet or an evangelist or a youth minister.  I am a teacher.  I knew instinctively by the Holy Spirit that these other office ministries were needed in my local church, but I had to learn the hard way that I could not effectively do them.  I needed those who were called to do those things.
In most small churches, there is no provision for obtaining capable staff members who flow in the needed fivefold calling.  You must find each of them and have these come alongside you to help you bring your local church to its rightful place in the Lord.
Within our fellowship of churches (Network of Related Pastors, NRP), we have a reservoir of the fivefold ministry giftings that move among our churches to help them achieve a full and needed balance of ministry.  The blessing of working together affords us the expertise that God intends for every local congregation, while releasing the pastor to do what he is supposed to do best.
