MENTORING

Life-Style Oriented; Caught rather than taught.

Philippians 4:9, “The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”

John 1:39, “He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where He was staying, and remained with Him that day (now it was about the tenth hour).”

Matthew 11:29, “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

John 14:9, “Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip?”

  1. A long-term personal relationship where a more experienced person demonstrates by his own lifestyle a pattern of successful living to his followers
  2. Mentoring is about FOLLOWING someone.
  3. On the job training.
  4. Learning as you “do ministry together”

TRAINING

SubjectOriented; Skills are Taught.

Luke 6:40, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher.”

2 Timothy 3:24, “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,”

Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it.”

  • A skill set that is taught to accomplish certain tasks.
  • More suited to the classroom.
  • More subject oriented.

INSTRUCTION

ConductOriented; Rules of Engagement. Principles are Taught.

Proverbs 4:13, “Take firm hold of instruction, do not let go; Keep her, for she is your life.”

2 Timothy 3:16, “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,”

Hebrews 6:1, “Therefore, leaving the discussion of the elementary principles of Christ, let us go on to perfection, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God,”

  • Fundamental principles, adherence to a set of guidelines.
  • Core Beliefs & Practices
  • This is who we are and this is how we act.
  • Compliance to an already established set of rules.
